SE Asian Grab users get a Lyft in the US
Southeast Asians heading to the US can now get a ride with Lyft via their Grab ride hailing app.
Grab users can book a ride in 200 US cities directly within the Grab app interface.
Formerly called GrabTaxi, it has about four million users in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Although Grab has a cash payment option in some Asia markets, this will not be available in the US for Lyft rides.
"Users will be prompted to add a cashless option," said Grab head of product Joel Yarborough.
"What is important to us is that people use the experience they’re familiar with and that they trust when they travel," Yarborough said.
The Lyft-Grab alliance is just a part of a global ‘anti-Uber’ strategic bloc which also includes the market leaders in India and China – Ola and Didi.
Didi and Lyft recently launched its own cross-booking feature in the US.
The two-way integration between Grab and Lyft will be complete within weeks when Lyft users will be able to e-hail the GrabCar and GrabTaxi services in 30 markets in Southeast Asia.
