Sea-Tac flights disrupted by cyberattack
A targeted cyberattack has been confirmed as the reason for a major IT outage at the Port of Seattle over the weekend.
The IT outage caused major travel disruption with hundreds of flights delayed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation with assistance of outside experts We have contacted and are working closely with federal partners, including TSA and Customs and Border Protection,” said Lance Lyttle, Aviation Managing Director.
Although TSA operations including passenger security screening were unaffected, flight delays occurred due to non-operable check-in systems.
This caused lengthy manual check-in, resulting in long lines for passengers over the weekend.
FlightAware reported 460 flight delays and five flight cancellations on Sunday.
More than 70,000 passengers were scheduled to fly on Sunday.
The cyberattack outage also disrupted baggage systems.
“We are starting to see some impacts with the Port of Seattle’s baggage sorting system, so we are proactively warning guests who are flying out of Seattle to avoid checking a bag if possible,” Alaska Airlines said.
The Port of Seattle’s public website was still offline by Monday morning.
The reason why the Port of Seattle was targeted in the cyberattack remains unknown.
