Tuesday, 30 August 20163 min read

A second British backpacker had died following a frenzied knife attack at a hostel in Queensland, Australia.

Police said Thomas Jackson, a 30-year-old freelance journalist, died of his injuries at Townsville Hospital following the attack a week ago.

Jackson was allegedly stabbed in the eye, face and torso after he rushed to help Briton Mia Ayliffe-Chung as she lay dying in the bathroom of Shelley’s Backpackers hostel.

Both were allegedly knifed by Frenchman Smail Ayad, 29, who was arrested and charged with Ayliffe-Chung’s murder and Jackson’s attempted murder last Friday. Police said he now faces a second count of murder.
