Beijing has issued its second ‘red alert’ this month ahead of a wave of thick smog arriving in China’s capital at the weekend.
The National Meteorological Centre is warning that the smog will stretch from Xian, the site of the world famous Terracotta Warriors, one of China’s top tourist attractions, to Harbin in the northest of the country.
However, the worst of the smog is expected to settle over Beijing. It is due to roll in from Saturday night and last until Tuesday, pushing the pollution index higher than 500. At levels of 300 or above, people are advised to remain indoors.
The Beijing government issued its first ever ‘red alert’ last week, forcing half the vehicles off the road by enforcing an alternate odd-even number plate system, and closing down schools and construction sites.
