Luxury Shangri-La Kunming opens as cultural gateway in Yunnan

Shangri-La Group has opened Shangri-La Kunming on April 21, positioning the property as a design-led gateway to Yunnan’s rich cultural heritage.

Inspired by the concept of a “Tea Merchant’s Mansion,” the hotel blends signature Asian hospitality with local traditions, offering guests an immersive introduction to the region’s landscapes, artistry, and tea culture.

The property reflects the refined atmosphere of a historic tea merchant’s residence. Interiors feature curated cultural details, including the “Secret Garden” and artistic lobby installations such as Woven Mountains and Woven Spring, which evoke Kunming’s natural beauty. On the 18th floor, the Horizon Club Lounge centers around a red copper fireplace, creating a social space for tea and relaxation, while stained-glass corridor windows provide evolving views throughout the day.

The hotel offers 75 rooms and suites, all with Horizon Club Lounge access. Categories range from the 55 sqm Horizon Executive Room, styled in calming green tones, to larger suites inspired by Yunnan’s biodiversity, incorporating nature motifs like birds and butterflies.

Standout accommodations include the 120 sqm Rose Blossom Romantic Suite, designed for special occasions, and the 192 sqm Tea Sanctuary Residence Suite, which highlights Yunnan’s tea culture through earthy interiors, rare teas, and artisanal tea ware.

Families are also a key focus. The Wildwood Camper Family Suite draws inspiration from Xishuangbanna’s tropical environment, with playful features such as bunk beds, slides, and interactive décor. The Questers Family Room adds an educational element, encouraging children to explore Kunming through storytelling and themed activities.

Dining rooted in local terroir

Food and beverage offerings spotlight Yunnan’s diverse produce. At the Horizon Club Lounge, guests can sample regional specialties including Xuanwei ham, wild mushrooms, rose pastries, and locally grown coffee.

SUMA Bar delivers a destination-driven drinks concept, using indigenous ingredients to create signature cocktails. Highlights include wines made with glacier meltwater and spirits infused with local botanicals.

The hotel’s Chinese restaurant, Dian Voyage Yunnan Cuisine, is led by chefs Liu Xin and Yang Bolin, both recognized by Michelin and Black Pearl guides.

Their menus reinterpret traditional flavors with a modern approach, drawing on the heritage of the Ancient Tea Horse Road and sourcing ingredients from highland regions.

Tea culture at the core

Tea plays a central role in the guest experience. Visitors are welcomed with a seasonal tea ritual, while curated tea tastings are hosted in the Horizon Club Lounge. Guests can also experience the traditional Dali Bai “Three Course Tea” ceremony, which progresses from bitter to sweet to lingering flavors.

A dedicated Personal Host service enhances the stay, offering tailored recommendations and insights into the hotel’s design and cultural elements.

Facilities include an indoor heated pool inspired by rainforest scenery, a 24-hour fitness center, and more than 2,000 sqm of event space. This includes a 1,000 sqm pillarless ballroom designed for conferences, weddings, and social events.

Shangri-La Kunming operates alongside JEN Kunming under a dual-brand model, catering to a broad range of travelers. To mark the opening, a “Luxury Escape” package is available through June 30, 2026, featuring lounge access, dining perks, and bar experiences.
