Sharp rise in term time holiday fines
Fines for taking children out of school in term time have risen sharply since the government ban on holidays in school time.
According to a BBC survey taken from local authority data, almost 64,000 fines have been issued since the law changed in September 2013, a rise of about 70%.
More than three quarters of councils, 118, responded to the survey..
Lancashire issued the most fines, up 176% from 1,125 to 3,106. West Sussex was up 146% from 973 to 2,403.
Overall the figures suggest that in England parents received at least 63,837 fines in the academic year to July 2014, compared with 37,650 fines in the previous 12 months.
New regulations mean that school heads can no longer grant 10 days’ holiday ‘in special circumstances’.
But they can still allow extended leave for more than 10 school days ‘in exceptional circumstances’.
