Snow, at last - TravelMole

Snow, at last

Friday, 08 Mar, 2019 0

After a long dry patch, it’s been snowing in many ski resorts this week. Here’s a round-up of conditions in the Alps, the Pyrenees and North America.

FRANCE
French ski resorts got their first significant snowfall for three weeks last weekend, when five to 15 cms of snow fell across the Alps. The deepest base is in the Pyrenees resort of Cauterets. In the Alps, Bonneval sur Arc has the most snow. However, all the major resorts are holding up well, so the snow should last for the rest of the season.

ITALY
Many resorts in both the Alps and the Dolomites have received some welcome fresh snow. The deepest snow is presently on the Presena Glacier in Lombardy. Fresh snow is expected in more than 200 resorts.

AUSTRIA
The whole country is expecting fresh snow this week, and the Steiermark, Salzburgerland and Lower Austria provinces have already seen some big dumps. Obertauern was one of several to get 10cms. On the whole, conditions on the pistes are good.

ANDORRA
It’s been almost a month since there was any fresh snow in Andorra, but a fresh dump is expected later this week and all areas are open, with good bases in every resort. The deepest snow is at Arcalis in the Vallnord area. In Grandvalira, conditions are good and there’s enough snow to last the rest of the season.

NORTH AMERICA
In California, Mammoth has continued to have snow throughout the week adding to the unprecedented amount from the last month. Over in Wyoming, Jackson Hole was also expecting 40cms.

Colorado snow levels are high too with denser snow expected to fall this week. Vail is expected to have 10cms each day, with temperatures sticking around freezing.

In Canada, there’s plenty of groomed terrain on offer in Banff, though little fresh snow to report. Clear skies and very cool days are keeping the slopes in fantastic shape, with almost the entire mountain open across both Sunshine Village and Lake Louise. There’s minimal new snowfall on current forecasts, just plenty more sun.

There’s been some welcome snowfall across resorts in Britsh Columbia, including 15cm overnight in Fernie, building up to a 70cm accumulation in the past 70 days. Other resorts which were enjoying fresh powder include Big White and Revelstoke, with the snowfall and cold weather expected to continue throughout Friday before giving way to warmer weather heading into the weekend.
