Southwest Airlines to stop serving peanuts
Beginning next month Southwest Airlines will stop serving peanuts on all flights.
Responding to numerous incidents of severe reactions to nut allergies mid-flight, the airline will ditch the packaged snacks.
"Peanuts forever will be part of Southwest’s history and DNA," the airline said.
"However, to ensure the best on-board experience for everyone, especially for customers with peanut-related allergies, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue serving peanuts on all flights beginning August 1."
According to FDA data, about 150 people die in the US each year due to nut allergies.
American Airlines and United don’t serve packaged peanuts but still have meals which may contain nuts.
Southwest will still offer complementary pretzels and other snacks on longer routes, to ‘please customers who might be nostalgic or sad to see peanuts go.’
A severe reaction can take place when a sufferer is just in the vicinity of someone eating nuts or if there are traces of nuts still lingering in the cabin.
