Spain cheapest for driving holidays
Spain has the cheapest petrol in the eurozone but Switzerland has the lowest prices at the pump in Europe.
Meanwhile, the UK is the ninth most expensive European country after Belgium, Holland and Norway.
The cost per litre in Spain is 65p and Switzerland 57p against 86p in the UK, 88p in Belgium, 89p in Holland and 90p in Norway.
The findings come from a motoring in Europe survey by American Express Foreign Exchange based on June prices for unleaded petrol in 12 European motoring destinations.
Ireland is tipped as a good choice for self-drive holidays, with petrol prices 16p cheaper than in the UK.
For fly-drive, Spain offered the best value when combining car hire costs and petrol charges – £30 less than France. Fly-drive costs grew less than expected because most car rental charges have gone down this year, according to Amex.
Amex Foreign Exchange vice-president Europe Katrina Harrison said: “It seems likely that there will again be a significant amount of last minute travel this summer and holidaymakers yet to decide on their destinations can save money by choosing a motoring route that combines Switzerland and Austria.”
