Sydney Airport development plans unveiled
Sydney Airport Corp will seek community feedback for a $250 million re-development of a 20-hectare parcel of land at the south-east precinct of the airpor after unveiling two plans on Monday.
One option includes substantial office space, while the other features cinemas. Both include discount retail outlets, bulky goods retailing, a supermarket as well as car parking, with construction potentially commencing in 2007 and completion possible by 2008.
However, local councils are expected to vigourosly oppose the proposals, until they are re-assured that the propoer infrastructure is put in place. One of the propsals most strident critics, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore was quoted as saying “I look forward to hearing from Sydney Airport about the detail of its proposal”
SACL executive chairman and CEO Max Moore-Wilton said community input would be carefully considered.“A development of this sort, on underutilised land at Sydney Airport, will serve to benefit the surrounding community.“All the world’s great airports are moving towards a model that offers a diverse mix of non-aeronautical services so as to have a more sustainable and cost-effective business.”
The Shopping Council of Australia has opposed retail development on federal airport land because these developments do not conform to state or regional planning regulations.
Council spokesman Milton Cockburn said he could not comment until he had seen the plans.
The consultation will run for 90 days.
