Travellers visiting the Taj Mahal will have to shell out more for the privilege after authorities hiked the price of tickets.
Entry to the famous monument has doubled in price for domestic visitors from Rs20 to Rs40 while foreign visitors now pay Rs1,000, up from Rs750.
While the increases are significant, they are actually less than originally proposed by custodians the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
ASI asked for increases to Rs50 for domestic and Rs1,250 for foreign tourists, but the government relented after protests from the local tourism industry.
Entrance tickets to other monuments within the Agra circuit such as Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort, Etmauddaula and Sikandra have also been raised by a similar percentage.
