One of India’s most iconic tourist attractions will trial e-ticketing later this month, aiming to cut down on long queues and end the scourge of unscrupulous ticket touts.
Visitors to Agra’s Taj Mahal often have to suffer long waiting times at ticket counters but that could be about to change, says government agency Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
ASI will trial e-ticketing from 25 December for one month and will monitor visitors’ feedback and iron out any technical difficulties.
Online tickets are being heavily encouraged but visitors will still be able to buy tickets in person outside the monument.
The move toward automating entry is in part to better calculate the exact number of tourists visiting the monument with a view to possibly limiting the number of tickets sold each day.
It is estimated over six million tourists visited the Taj Mahal last year.
