Thomas Cook secure landmark Amex deal
Thomas Cook will start selling American Express products through its shops for the first time in the retailer’s 150-year history.
Under an agreement between the companies, Thomas Cook will sell the new Amex travellers cheques pre-paid card through its shops, call centres and website. In addition, from January 2006 it will also distribute the traditional paper cheques.
Both firms heralded the move as an alliance between two of travel’s most recognised brands.
“By entering into this partnership we are harnessing the power of two leading brands, renowned for quality and innovation,” said Thomas Cook foreign exchange director Melanie Whitehouse.
The new payment card enables travellers to pre-pay for their holiday spending money and can be reloaded with US dollars, euros and sterling. If the card is stolen, the balance will be refunded, usually within 24 hours.
“We are delighted to partner with Thomas Cook and be able to offer its customers the choice of the traditional paper travellers cheques and the new generation of travel money,” said American Express prepaid card service Europe vice president Stefan Happ.
