A 14-year-old girl is still missing this morning, three people are dead and eight others are injured after a Sydney Ferries HarbourCat hit a 10-metre private wooden motor cruiser carrying about 12 people last night under the Sydney Harbour Bridge at about 10:45pm.
Sydney Water Police Commander Terry Dalton said that the cause of a crash between a ferry and a private boat in Sydney Harbour is not yet clear, having occurred near Pier 1, in the centre of the harbour, about 10.45pm (AEST).
He told media, “We don’t know what the recreational vessel was doing at the time, whether it was stationary, whether it was underway, whether there was an attempt to anchor it, we just don’t know and we won’t until such time as witnesses have been interviewed.” He added, “There are no speed restrictions in that area.
Both vessels have been recovered and will be forensically examined and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
Police have set up a hotline for concerned relatives to contact the Marine Area Command on 1800 658 784, with Police divers today resuming their search for the missing girl.
Commander Dalton said. “The divers did search last night and recovered most of the vessel that had been sunk, but we unfortunately couldn’t locate the missing child,” with Sydney Ferries CEO Rear Admiral Geoff Smith saying that the organisation was co-operating with police in the accident investigation, adding, “We are co-operating absolutely fully with them because we are determined to get to the bottom of this, what happened and how this occurred.”
