Agents who feel sorry for British Airways now that its proposed
alliance with American Airlines has fallen through are probably
few and far between. See:

Some observers had expected that the regulatory authorities
might go soft on AA/BA in the wake of the September 11 terrorist
attacks and its subsequent impact on the aviation industry. This
has proved not to be the case and is probably good news for
consumers who would almost certainly have seen fares go up on
transatlantic routes as a result.

1. Ryanair announces 8 new routes from London Stansted


Ryanair has announced 8 new routes from London Stansted to
Continental Europe, including a new domestic service from London
to Newquay. In addition, Ryanair will also be adding new
services from Glasgow Prestwick to Oslo Torp; Liverpool to
Brussels Charleroi; and a new route to Rome Ciampino from its
Brussels Charleroi base.

2. New Swissair to be called ‘Swiss’


Switzerland’s revamped national airline will be known simply as
Swiss. Unveiling the corporate image for the new company,
managers said the new name reflected the “typical Swiss
characteristics of quality”.

3. KLM reveals GBP 57 million loss


KLM, the first European airline to report for the final three
months of last year, has revealed a GBP 57 million third-quarter
loss, but the company says there are signs of an upturn in the
aviation industry.

4. Usit Campus Ltd ceases trading


The Civil Aviation Authority has announced that it has called
the GBP 1.3 million bond of London-based student travel
specialist Usit Campus Limited, which has ceased trading.

Expedia has reported record revenue and earnings for the last
quarter of 2001.

Profits at American Express during the fourth quarter of the
year more than halved, the company has revealed.

7. lastminute.com announces Japan joint venture


lastminute.com has announced it is in the final phase of signing
a joint venture agreement to establish a new e-commerce business
under the lastminute.com brand in Japan.

9. Strikes to hit Manchester Airport next week


A series of one hour strikes are to take place at Manchester
Airport next week, the Transport and General Workers Union has
confirmed.

10. WTO appoints Lipman as special advisor


The World Tourism Organization (WTO) has appointed Geoffrey
Lipman as special advisor to the Secretary-General on Trade in
Tourism Services.

11. Tourism Peace Conference seen as run-up to World Summit


The first African Peace Through Tourism Conference, March 3-7,
will assist in developing strategies which will be put on the
table at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in
Johannesburg in August/September.

At least 100 Zimbabwean tourism companies have been forced to
close over the past year, with scores more downscaling their
operations due to political turmoil, the Zimbabwean Tourism
Authority (ZTA) reports.
