1. Agents to benefit in VAT proposal

The European Commission is planning to make life easier for
travel agents by simplifying the VAT arrangements that govern
the selling of holiday packages for destinations within the EU.

2. State bails out air traffic control
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Government has agreed to a GBP 30 million emergency bail out
of the cash-strapped newly-privatised air traffic control
service. After a day of denial by all sides that there was a
financial crisis within National Air Traffic Services (Nats), it
has emerged that a loan deal had been agreed.

3. Virgin Atlantic places $2bn order with Airbus and Rolls Royce

Virgin Atlantic has confirmed it will be the launch customer for
the new A340-600 by ordering $2bn worth of the Airbus aircraft
and 50 Rolls Royce engines, helping to secure 3,000 British
jobs. The new planes, which have a range of more than 7,000
miles, will replace Virgin’s current A340-300 fleet.

4. Research shows business traveller important to leisure market

UK cities and resorts should do more to encourage business
visitors to extend their trip, according to research being
carried out by the Business Tourism Partnership.

New figures released today by the Air Transport Users Council
(AUC) show holidaymakers last summer faced the fewest delays on
charter airlines for five years.

Worldspan has announced its latest e-commerce travel-booking
product to be interfaced to the Worldspan system, Vinet Internet

8. Datalex Q4 results hit by September 11 effect

Travel technology firm Datalex has revealed that its total
revenues during the last three months of 2001 were down by 49%
compared to the same period a year earlier.

9. PKF report: UK regional hotels show promising start to 2002

According to PKF’s preliminary January figures for hotel
performance, UK regional hotels enjoyed an encouraging start to
2002, with a 0.5% increase in room occupancy on 2001.
