Tourists warned after Cape Town muggings
Police in the South African city of Cape Town are investigating a series of attacks on tourists, including the stabbing of a Japanese woman on Table Mountain.
According to the online news service News24.com, the incident took place on Tuesday as the woman set off for a hike on the famous, flat-topped mountain.
A Japanese consulate spokesman is quoted as saying: “When she arrived at Platteklipkloof, a man offered to act as her guide. When she refused his services, he pulled out a knife and stabbed her.”
She was stabbed three times in the back and once in the chest.
A spokesman for the Wilderness Search and Rescue service said that one road leading to the mountain had become so dangerous that his rescue team was loath to search for people at night: “Several hikers have encountered criminals there. I recommend that people do not walk in the remote areas of the mountain and rather stay in groups of at least four people.”
