Travel warnings as snow and flooding hit Britain

Friday, 22 March 20133 min read

Heavy snow and icy conditions are causing delays and disruption to flights in some parts of the UK with more wintry weather expected over the weekend.

Flights are delayed to and from Leeds Bradford Airport after the airport was closed earlier today due to adverse weather conditions.

The airport, which was also closed due to bad weather earlier this week, is advising passengers to check the status of their flight and to also allow more time to travel to the airport due to problems on access roads.

Belfast International Airport is warning passengers of possible delays today and tomorrow due to heavy snow and rain, while Liverpool airport is also advising passengers to check the status of their flight.

Forecasters warn that roads in northern parts of Wales, the Midlands into the Pennines, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland would be the worst hit today (Friday).

They said heavy snow and icy conditions could continue into the weekend, with snow expected to fall everywhere north of the M4 corridor.

Some higher areas of Scotland could get up to 40cm of snow, while gale force winds are expected to create blizzard-like conditions across parts of Britain.

Meanwhile, parts of southern Cornall and Devon are being badly affected by flooding, with some areas seeing 50-75mm of rain falling in a few days.

The Environment Agency has issued 19 flood warnings, which means flooding is expected and immediate action required, mainly in the southeast and southwest.

It has also issued 82 flood alerts, which mean that flooding is possible so be prepared.
