Travel commerce platform Travelport is adding the ‘X’ code for a third gender on flight bookings.
From June 1, X will be another option, joining ‘M’ and ‘F.’
The new code is available to all of the 480 airlines on its platform if they choose to adopt it.
A gender designation is required for passengers traveling to or transiting in countries such as the US, Canada, China, Japan, South Africa and the UAE.
US carriers including United, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines said they would adopt the ‘X’ code.
It has been approved by UN aviation agency the International Civil Aviation Organisation and is already being used in countries like Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, India, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, and Pakistan.
"As a company committed to diversity and promoting travel for all, we are delighted that the new code for non-binary gender passengers has now been introduced. We hope more airlines will provide this option to ensure their customers are fully respected and welcomed. For us "X" marks a vote for diversity, dignity and respect," said Travelport CEO Gordon Wilson.
The company also completed a deal to return to private ownership this week.
The all-cash $4.4 billion deal removes it from public trading on the New York Stock Exchange and into the hands of Siris Capital Group and Evergreen Capital.
