Nova Scotia based airline Canjet has announced huge layoffs of more than 70% of flight crew following the failure of its European services.
The carrier will lay off 47 pilots and 68 flight attendants after ceasing its Europe operations which were "simply not profitable" Canjet president Stephen Rowe said.
"It is disappointing we have to realign our employee group today to a much smaller group," he said.
Canjet also operates charter flights for Transat Holidays but that contract is about to come to an end soon.
Rowe said the Europe flights "fell short of our financial requirements" and all alternatives will be looked at, including adding scheduled flights in Canada and overseas.
Although the airline says flight services will continue, the union representing the affected crew say Canjet’s future as a going concern is in doubt.
"It is clear today that plans to essentially shutter the airline were made some time ago." The Air Line Pilots Association said.
