Two people were killed and two others injured after a theme park roller coaster derailment in Mexico.

The last car on a rollercoaster at Mexico City’s La Feria de Chapultepec amusement park derailed and fell about 30 feet to the ground.

The two dead men, aged 18 and 21, suffered head injuries as did one of their female companions in the car who remains in a serious condition.

A second woman also suffered a leg injury which required surgery.

Ulises Lara López, a spokesman for the Attorney-General’s office, said a preliminary inspection of the coaster points to mechanical failure.

It is being treated as negligent homicide.

"This is now in the hands of prosecutors, and prosecutors have already taken the necessary steps for an investigation," said Miriam Urzua, spokesman for the Mexico civil protection organisation.

Park management opened its own investigation and ‘deeply regrets the terrible accident.’

The park was closed immediately after the accident.

La Feria de Chapultepec is popular with locals and visitors and features about 50 rides and attractions.
