United Airlines-backed joint venture buying ExpressJet

United Airlines is taking over regional partner ExpressJet.

ExpressJet will be sold by parent SkyWest to new joint venture ManaAir for $70 million of which United has a stake.

The deal is expected to close in January 2019, United said.

The sale of ExpressJet follows the end of its agreement to fly regional services for Delta Air Lines and the end of the current contract with American Airlines in April 2019.

Then, ExpressJet will fly regional services exclusively for the United Express brand.

It currently operates United Express services with Bombardier and Embraer jets.

SkyWest CEO Chip Childs said the deal ‘provides further clarity and focus for the future.’

Utah based SkyWest Inc will retain ownership of CRJ aircraft currently being flown by ExpressJet.
