United taps ‘direct air capture’ tech to completely remove emissions

Saturday, 14 Dec, 2020 0

United Airlines has outlined ambitious goals to cut emissions by 100% by 2050.

While most airlines continue to focus on carbon offset programs, United is taking a bolder approach.

It is tapping innovative carbon capture technology known as Direct Air Capture and will make a multi-million dollar investment in a partnership with 1PointFive.

The process physically captures CO2 and permanently stores it underground.

The procedure turns CO2 into a gas form which can then be stored safely.

"As the leader of one of the world’s largest airlines, I recognize our responsibility in contributing to fight climate change, as well as our responsibility to solve it," said United CEO Scott Kirby.

"We’re not just doing it to meet our own sustainability goal; we’re doing it to drive the positive change our entire industry requires."

Separately, United invested more than $30 million in sustainable fuel producer Fulcrum BioEnergy and last year renewed a contract to puchase up to 10 million gallons of sustainable fuel from Boston-based World Energy.
