Western Australia braced for dangerous cyclone
Residents in parts of Western Australia have fled as a strong Category 4 cyclone is close to making landfall
Tropical Cyclone Ilsa could be first Cat 4 storm to hit the region in over a decade.
It could make landfall late Thursday or Early Friday.
It is expected to hit between Port Hedland and the popular tourist town of Broome.
Tourist operators, farms and caravan parks have been evacuated.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology warned of 200kph winds, high waves and flooding.
“Where the system crosses the coast, people are going to experience some very destructive winds. They’re going to cause a lot of damage,” it said.
“People need to make sure they’re well prepared for winds in excess of 200kph, which is going to be significant.”
Meteorologists say the cyclone could venture hundreds of kilometres inland before losing strength.
